The Electrochemistry and Electroplating Group at The Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, Technische Universität Ilmenau, Germany, announces the opening of a position for

PhD Student (f/m/d)

The announced position is in the frames of research project with Umicore NV/SA on performance improvement of “anode-free” rechargeable Li-metal batteries. Our aim is to enhance the knowledge on the processes at the negative electrode interface that depend on the substrate nature and interfacial geometry. Therefore, the focus of the research will be set on the structural design of the substrate at the micro-/nanoscale and development of methods for surface modification. The research activities will be finalized by conclusive evaluation of the strategically developed electrode interfaces/materials.

Your tasks

  • design and structural characterization of anode substrates based on micro- and nano-dimensional materials
  • exploring the electrochemical performance of the developed materials and interfaces as anodes for Li-metal battery at different thermal and mechanical conditions
  • conclusive evaluation of the acquired experimental data and building strategies for battery performance improvement in terms of efficiency and cycling stability
  • elaboration of simple, low energy consuming and environmentally friendly technological solutions
  • application of electrochemical, microscopy, microgravmetric, dilatometric and spectroscopic characterisation techniques
  • assisting the training of students in the field of electrochemistry

  • Our requirements:

  • MEng/MSc in chemistry, electrochemistry, material science or physics
  • self-motivation, analytical thinking and creativity in finding optimal solutions
  • good lab and technical skills
  • experience with electrochemical methods
  • knowledge of spectroscopy methods (experience with XPS is an advantage)
  • competence to work in interdisciplinary team
  • good communication skills
  • fluent English (knowledge of German is an advantage)
