In the Theoretical Solid State Physics Group at the Institute of Physics in the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) is a vacancy for a

Research assistant (f/m/d)

as soon as possible.

The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD).

The Theoretical Solid State Physics Group (Jun.-Prof. Christian Dreßler) investigates the structure and dynamics of condensed matter systems using molecular dynamics simulations and density functional theory. In particular, we develop multiscale approaches to describe proton transport in energy materials. In addition to the topics listed below, we encourage further (collaborative) projects in the field based on the candidates interests. Parallel to the doctoral studies, we support (if desired) the attendance of chemistry, physics or mathematics lectures.

There is the possibility to work partly in the home office.

Your tasks

Your job tasks include:

  • classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (also utilising machine-learned intermolecular potentials) to investigate, among others, the following systems/phenomena:
    • ion transport in energy materials
    • semiconductor/water and semiconductor/oxygen interfaces for (ternary) III-V semiconductors
    • tautomerism in phthalocyanine molecules (adsorbed on silver surfaces)
    • structure and dynamics of binary organic solvent mixtures in VYCOR nanopores
  • development of multiscale approaches to describe the transport of protons and lithium ions in energy materials and ionic liquids
  • investigation of efficient representations of the linear density-density response function for the description of polarisation interactions in classical molecular dynamics simulation
  • performance of teaching tasks
  • preparation of scientific manuscripts and publications and assistance in the preparation of scientific project proposals

    Your profile

For being part of the selection process is needed:

    • university degree (M. Sc. (Univ.) or equivalent) in chemistry, physics or theoretical/computational materials science, and profound knowledge in computational and theoretical physics/chemistry
    • good scripting and programming skills (Python is appreciated)
    • Very good communication skills in German and English

    Following competences are desirable:

    • passion and enthusiasm for what you want to investigate
    • experience in classical and quantum chemical molecular dynamics simulations
    • experience in density functional theory
    • confident handling of Linux operating systems
    • capability of team work, also with experimental partners

Please provide evidence of the qualifications required for the job by certificates and references.

        What we offer you:

        • attractive remuneration according to collective agreement (as per TV-L) incl. granting of a special annual payment
        • vacation entitlement of 30 days in the calendar year and additional days off on 24 / 31 December
        • flexible working time model
        • VBL - pension scheme in the public sector

From individual advancement with a wide range of continuing education opportunities to a variety of health and recreational offerings, you can expect an appreciative working environment at a renowned university at TU Ilmenau. In addition to an attractive, family friendly working hour’s model, you will also benefit from advantages such as the use of the dining halls of the Studentenwerk Thüringen, as well as participation in several attractive sport offers from the university owned sport centrum.
