Research Assistant / PhD Candidate (f/m/d)

The position includes scientific collaboration within a research project on „Experimental investigation of coupled MHD and thermal radiation effects in Rayleigh Bénard Convection“ which is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The position offers the opportunity to receive a doctoral degree in the engineering field of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.


Your tasks

Rayleigh Bénard convection explores the thermally-driven heat and mass transfer in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled at its top. The present project aims to extend this classical model experiment on thermal convection to the case of an electrically conducting salt melt operating at high temperatures. In this experimentally widely unexplored parameter range the additional heat transfer mode of thermal radiation and the effects of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) due to the additional presence of electromagnetically-induced body forces are of special interest. Technical applications of such systems are in the fields of energy storage technologies and renewable energies. The main tasks within the project include the set-up and the instrumentation of a respective model experiment as well as the measurement of temperatures and flow velocities using suited experimental techniques. Moreover, the experimental findings are subject to scientific documentation, presentation at international conferences, and publication in scientific journals.


Our expectations

The successful applicant holds an excellent master or diploma (univ.) degree in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, physics, or renewable energy technologies and shows a strong background in the fields of engineering thermodynamics and applied heat transfer. Basic knowledge in experimental fluid mechanics, measurement technologies, and MHD are favorable. Moreover, the position requires a high motivation for conducting scientific work in the field of fundamental research, a highly-organized working method, excellent skills in written and spoken English and German.
