In the Institute of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the Ilmenau University of Technology (TU Ilmenau, Germany) is a vacancy for a

Research assistant (PhD-candidate or Postdoc) (f/m/d)

from 01.01.2025.

The team of the Institute of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics works on different scientific problems ranging from large-scale turbulence in thermally driven flows to small-scale phenomena in microfluidics. For a better understanding, we apply direct numerical simulations, advanced laser based measurement techniques and data evaluation exploiting machine learning approaches or quantum algorithms. For the KapMemLyse research group, funded by the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society, we will investigate how hydrogen production by capillary electrolysis combined with a polymeric anion exchange membrane can be designed more efficiently and scalably.

Your tasks

The position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Development of an experimental model to analyse the capillary flow by optical flow measurement methods and numerical simulation
  • Numerical determination of the flow in a stack comprising the capillary (including electrochemistry) and porous structures to estimate the performance of the electrolysis stack using a model to be developed
  • Collaborative exchange with the other partners in the interdisciplinary KapMemLyse consortium
  • Preparation of scientific publications in high-ranking international journals and participation in international conferences

    Your profile

For being part of the selection process is needed:

    • Completed scientific university degree (Master of Science or diploma (Univ.)) in engineering, physics, chemistry or a comparable subject with a background in fluid mechanics
    • Experiences in computational fluid dynamics (Comsol Multiphysics desirable)
    • Programming skills (Python or Matlab desirable)
    • Good knowledge of German and English (both, written and spoken)

    Following competences are desirable:

    • Passion and enthusiasm for the work and to contribute to the success of the team
    • Experiences in experimental and numerical fluid mechanics / microfluidics
    • Experiences in image processing and optical systems
    • Experiences in electrochemistry
    • Ability to work in an international and interdisciplinary team

Please provide evidence of the qualifications required for the job by certificates and references.

        What we offer you:

        • attractive remuneration according to collective agreement (as per TV-L) incl. granting of a special annual payment
        • vacation entitlement of 30 days in the calendar year and additional days off on 24 / 31 December
        • flexible working time model
        • VBL - pension scheme in the public sector

From individual advancement with a wide range of continuing education opportunities to a variety of health and recreational offerings, you can expect an appreciative working environment at a renowned university at TU Ilmenau. In addition to an attractive, family friendly working hour’s model, you will also benefit from advantages such as the use of the dining halls of the Studiendenwerk Thüringen, as well as participation in several attractive sport offers from the university owned sport centrum.

The university stands in the fields of technology, mathematics and natural sciences, business and media for teaching and research at the highest level. It attaches particular importance to innovativ teaching and interdisciplinary. It identifies with Humboldt's ideals and pursues the vision of a cosmopolitan campus family.

Technische Universität llmenau is holder of the „TOTAL E-Quality“distinction and emphasizes gendered quality.

Severely disabled applicants with essentially identical professional suitability will be preferentially selected.
